JESSICA MOSS (https://jessicamoss.bandcamp.com)
Montreal violinist & vocalist Jessica Moss (Silver Mt. Zion), drops into Toronto behind her 3rd solo LP "Phosphenes" on Constellation Records. Recorded during the pandemic this new music channels her haunting grasp of long form post-classical composition. Tortured violin loops weave a web of bristly yet comforting fur. Errant vibrations blistering into distorted notes. Beauty finds a way to exist amongst inevitable sorrow. Contemplative and cosmic sound pieces exist in a space between the global hum. Minimal / maximal Moss treads the line between dark ambient and metallic drones. Get here on time for an inspiring & introspective performance.
KA BAIRD (https://sapropelicpycnic.bandcamp.com)
Long time experimenter, avant psych head, vocal adventurer KA Baird lands in Toronto for the first time since her Spires That In The Sunset Rise days. Her solo effort over the last years has seen Baird pushing the limits of her vocal techniques & lopping compositional prowess with a number of releases on RVNG Intl. and it's subsidiaries. Building song structures from the most basic elements she creates trance like soundscapes with glowing minimalist percussive timbres, vocals that feel like they're as essential as breath, and manipulated flute textures. In the solo realm Baird's penchant for psych creeps into the work, but never overshadows the playfully personal appeal her rhythmic outsider jams impart. One of the most exciting artists working in the avant space these days. Don't sleep on this!
PRINCE NIFTY (https://princenifty.bandcamp.com)
Producer / Musician / Polymath Toronto's Matt Smith kicks things off with his long running Prince Nifty project. Hot off the heels of his newest release "Interplanetary Machines", we see Smith playing with his voice, building choral arrangements that move from slow ballads to deep meditative drones. Hums & whispers fill out the backwoods of his compositions, creating a continuity with his methodical vocal phrasing. Each thought fades away before moving to the next. A beautifully full yet spacious sonic array that takes its time. Long form music that is entrenched in its own mood. Nifty is the expert aural arranger who presence is both invisible and all encompassing. Spin the new record, come on time!
Cutoff is Wednesday, August 24, 2022 5:59 pm EDT unless it sells out earlier.
