Event Details

Event type: All Ages

The 8th Annual Cannington Dog Sled Races and Winter Festival is held on Saturday, January 28, 2012 and Sunday, January 29, 2012. You can purchase tickets for either day. It is an extravaganza of family fun and entertainment that gets bigger and better each year. There is tons of fun to be had with lots of children’s activities all weekend long. Have a dog sled ride, pony ride or the complimentary horse drawn wagon rides. Included in the admission are family snowshoeing, kick sledding (like a scooter on snow!), snow tubing, big foot challenge, the Tater Toss, Snow Obstacle course and much more. Other highlights for the kids include the Zoo-to-you interactive exotic animal display and the Crayola Kid’s Activity Center.

The event is also a celebration of history, culture and tradition. You can visit a traditional First Nations village set up complete with re-enactors in traditional costume. The Métis, one of Canada's first nations people, historically used dog sleds for winter transportation and were dependent on them for their livelihood. There will also be a selection of native foods (bison burgers, bannock etc.) as well as crafts for sale.

An outdoor stage features performances in music and dance. The fiddle is the main instrument used in Métis music. Métis fiddle music is very upbeat so it won’t be long until you find your feet tapping along.

As well, there are historical buildings in the park from the pioneer days that will be open for touring.

There is also an outdoor vendor marketplace and various carving demonstrations in wood, soapstone and ice. The main street of Cannington is where the ice carving competition takes place so take a stroll and view the transformation of an ordinary block into a work of art.

And let's not forget the dogs! Over 80 mushers will compete for $10,000 in prize money. You will see 4 and 6 dog racing, as well as 1 and 2 dog ski-joring. Plus, we welcome back the Jamaica Dog Sled Team! Mush Mon!
