On, Friday, October 12, 2012, The Aeolian Performing Art Centre welcomes back to its stage Grammy-award winning pianist Chick Corea. This time he will be accompanied by vibraphonist and fellow Grammy-award winner Gary Burton and the Harlem String Quartet. Tickets go on sale Wednesday, July 18 at 10:00 am by phone or in person through The Aeolian box office and online at www.aeolianhall.ca only.
“Chick Corea is one of the greatest musical talents of our times and presenting him again in the intimacy of the acoustically superb Aeolian will be an unforgettable treat,” says Clark Bryan, Executive and Artistic Director at The Aeolian. “For the icing on the cake, hearing Chick with Gary Burton and The Harlem String Quartet will bring one of the most unique collaborations in the jazz world to London Ontario. What an opportunity!”
Chick Corea is a DownBeat Hall of Famer and NEA Jazz Master, 17-time Grammy winner, and undisputed keyboard virtuoso. He has attained living legend status after four decades of unparalleled creativity and a staggering artistic output. From involvement with the avant garde scene, the beginnings of jazz fusion and notable duet projects with Gary Burton, banjoist Bela Fleck and fellow jazz piano great Herbie Hancock, Chick has continued to explore new areas of jazz as an ever-evolving musician.
Gary Burton, a self-taught vibraphonist, maintains a varied and prolific career. Burton has recorded numerous solo albums, and with his band has been established as progenitors of the jazz fusion phenomenon. Burton has received six Grammy Awards throughout his career, 4 of which were for projects with Chick Corea.
Chick and Gary will be performing material from their new album Hot House, exploring their unique takes on “standards” — by composers from Kurt Weill and Antonio Carlos Jobim to Thelonious Monk and Lennon & McCartney. The multiple Grammy-winning duo also adds the Harlem String Quartet to the evening, expanding their legendary chamber-jazz repertoire on Chick’s composition “Mozart Goes Dancing” and classic Chick & Gary tunes.
The Harlem String Quartet, praised for its "panache" by The New York Times, is currently the resident ensemble in the New England Conservatory of Music's Professional String Quartet Program. Its mission is to advance diversity in classical music while engaging young and new audiences through the discovery and presentation of varied repertoire, highlighting works by minority composers.
All proceeds from this concert will go to El Sistema Aeolian, a program designed to offer free music training for youth with a focus on classical orchestral music.
