WORKING WITH TALENT: GETTING THE BEST FROM YOUR ACTORS
How do you get an excellent on-camera performance from an inexperienced cast? How do you find the right performer for your film? A panel of directors and performers will discuss the finer points of getting the most natural performance on film.

PENNY EIZENGA, award-winning, Toronto-based independent filmmaker. She has recently directed the short films Martin’s Hagge (2016) and The Run (2014), which won an Award of Merit in the Best Shorts Competition in La Jolla, California. She has also written and starred in two award-winning shorts: Wilderness (2011) and Margaret Finds Her Mojo (2014). https://www.dogearedproductionsinc.com
GEORGE MIHALKA, award-winning director with 47 credits. He has directed in Quebec, Europe and the U.S., moving with ease from French to English, comedy to drama, theatrical features to episodic television. His 1993 satirical feature, La Florida, about Quebec snowbirds, was a huge hit in that Quebec and the Golden Reel Award winner for the highest-grossing Canadian film of the year.
KATIE ULHMANN, award-winning actor and director from Trenton, Ontario. She has produced and starred in a variety of path-breaking media projects, such as her TV series, Katie Chats (in which she has held over 3000 interviews with luminaries including David Cronenberg), and recently, comedic short Pyramid Scream (2015), which won the Festival Director Award at the Toronto Independent Film Festival. She’s currently directing and starring in her (co-created, co-written) comedic TV series My Roommate’s an Escort. https://myroommatesanescort.com
ROMY GOULEM, coordinator of Fanshawe’s Advanced Filmmaking Program, where he teaches cinematography, screenwriting and directing. Romy is also an award-winning independent filmmaker and freelance director; in addition to two feature films, his work has appeared on CBC, CTV, MuchMusic, Discovery (Canada, US, UK, France) and Vision TV.
