THIRD GENDER IN SOUTH ASIA/BEING TRANSGENDER IN SOUTH ASIA
Curated by Reena Kukreja PhD. These two documentaries provide an intimate glimpse about the lived experience, struggles, and activism of transgender people in Pakistan and India. Both countries have laws that uphold transgender rights. However the LGBTQ community suffers stigma, discrimination and prejudice on an every day basis. The protagonists in Chuppan Chupai and Naked Wheels share their pain and desire while also offering a thought-provoking vision for equality, trans rights, and societal acceptance.
Naked Wheels d: Rajesh James/30:00 /2016 / India / Malayalam with English subtitles
The film is about the journey undertaken by a diverse group of people across South India in a truck from Kochi to Goa and back. Their journey covers a long distance towards an inclusive world, exploring many compelling thoughts on life, love, and gender with an ultimate hope for a society where no more lives are crushed or desire persecuted just because the majority does not “understand” it.
Chuppan Chupai- Hide and Seek d: Saadat Munir & Saad Khan/67:00/ Denmark/Pakistan/2013
The film shows the secret, yet open lives of a group of Pakistani sexual minorities, raising questions about transgender activism, religion, underground gay life, social acceptance and collective familial customs of transgender persons in urban Pakistan.
