A lovely adaptation of the novel by St. John’s-based writer Joan Clark, AN AUDIENCE OF CHAIRS tells the wrenching story of Maura (Carolina Bartczak), a woman whose struggle with bipolar disorder takes a terrible toll on her career as a concert pianist and on her life as a mother. Yet as dark as this drama may sometimes be, this third feature by Newfoundland’s Deanne Foley – the winner of four major awards at the Atlantic International Film Festival last fall – is continually brightened by moments of grace as well. It’s also energized by Bartczak’s ability to fully inhabit a character whose many layers are revealed in a saga that spans decades yet never loses its sense of intimacy or its sensitivity as a look at the impact of mental illness.

Deanne Foley is an award-winning filmmaker who made her mark with award-winning comedic shorts, TROMBONE TROUBLE and THE MAGNIFICENT MOLLY MCBRIDE. BEAT DOWN, starring Marthe Bernard (CBC’s REPUBLIC OF DOYLE) & Robb Wells (TRAILER PARK BOYS), debut feature film garnered three Canadian Comedy Award nominations including Best Direction and won five awards at domestic and international film festivals. Distributed by Equinox Films in Canada and Media New Luna internationally, the film can be seen on The Movie Network (TMN), Movie Central, HBO Canada, and SHAW On Demand.  Deanne’s sophomore feature, RELATIVE HAPPINESS, a romantic comedy, based on the best selling novel by Cape Breton writer, Lesley Crewe, was selected for Telefilm Canada’s Perspective Canada, Cannes 2014 and shortlisted for Whistler Film Festival’s 2014 Borsos Best Canadian Feature award. The film was theatrically released in Spring 2015. Deanne was delighted to direct episodes for CBC’s REPUBLIC OF DOYLE. She is an alumna of the prestigious Toronto’s International Talent Lab 2014 and WIDC CAM in St John’s . She is a member of Directors Guild of Canada, Writers Guild of Canada, WIFT-Atlantic and NIFCO.
