Roger Caron was 39 the year he made the transition from bank robber to celebrated author. By then, the Cornwall native had spent 23 years in Canada’s jails, including several stints in KP. Yet rather than break him, Caron’s experiences inside the country’s roughest prisons became his means of transforming himself into a literary star. Named after the memoir that won him a Governor General’s Award in 1978, GO-BOY! is a riveting account of Caron’s colorful life. Four years in the making, the film was a labour of love by director Rob Lindsay, who first read Caron’s book as a teenager in Kingston, where he could see the Pen from his bedroom window. Lindsay skillfully combines archival footage, his subject’s own words and new interviews with the people in Caron’s life, along with the insights of others who know what it’s like to be on either side of a cell door. The result is one of the most engaging docs you’ll see all year.
