One of the country’s most celebrated directors (and a Kingston native to boot), Patricia Rozema returns with what may be her most inventive feature to date. Performed and skillfully adapted by Amy Nostbakken and Sarah Camacho from their award-winning theatre work, MOUTHPIECE portrays a young woman’s struggle to write a eulogy for her mother’s funeral, a task that forces her to grapple with the challenges and complexities that are part of any mother-daughter dynamic. What makes the film so original is the fact that Nostbakken and Camacho simultaneously play two parts of the same character, a strategy that could’ve seemed gimmicky if not for all the wickedly smart dialogue, the duo’s knockout performances and Rozema’s expert direction. A Canada’s Top Ten selection, MOUTHPIECE is an audacious yet immensely moving portrait of grief as well as an insightful exploration of the roles and identities society imposes on women, especially those who – like the bisected heroine here – feel like they may really be many people at once.
