Across Ontario, more and more victims are being recruited from small towns and lured to a “big city” with promises of love and a “better life.” Police are seeing victims trafficked in small towns and cities throughout Ontario. These victims rarely identify themselves to police or other authorities.
Human trafficking involves the recruitment, transportation or harbouring of persons for the purposes of exploitation. It does not require the crossing of borders or any movement of persons. Exploitation is the key element of the offence and victims in search of an emotional connection are targeted.
Human Trafficking is happening in Wellington County. In 2020, Victim Services Wellington supported 33 victims of Human Trafficking. As a community, let's make sure we are informed on this topic, let's make sure we are aware of the signs and the red flags.
Join us as we learn together, and support the organizations who are on the front lines of the efforts to stop human trafficking. The session will cover the three aspects of Human Trafficking in Wellington County - how it happens, victims, and education & reporting the crime safely. The speakers will dispel myths and misunderstandings, and we will learn what we can do to help with a call to action to increase awareness, talk about Human Trafficking, and promote training opportunities.
'Human Trafficking In Wellington County' or #HTinWC is a two-year awareness initiative supported by Wellington County OPP, Victim Services Wellington and Crime Stoppers Guelph Wellington. This initiative is designed to increase awareness of Human Trafficking as well as Sexual Assault which is also far too prevalent in our communities.
