"Homecoming" is a story-telling workshop performance that delves into the intricate web of housing challenges and struggles within the Waterloo Region. Through a conversation between two characters – a landlord and a tenant – the story attempts to build a narrative that can resonate with the audience's experiences.
At its core, "Homecoming" explores the notions of 'home' and 'belonging'. The piece is an attempt to understand the perspectives of both the tenant and the landlord, presenting a balanced portrayal of their struggles, motivations, and vulnerabilities. Although the piece showcases the experiences of new Canadians, the essence of the play is not limited to the newcomer experience. It talks about universal emotions - one’s sense of displacement, and yearning for a place one can call their own. The story also examines the unconscious biases embedded within the rental process.
"Homecoming" invites its audience to reflect on their own notions of home and belonging, while also fostering empathy and understanding for the struggles faced by those attempting to find their footing within the community. In a world where housing inequities persist, such conversations are both timely and necessary, encouraging positive change and compassionate action.
