The rare sound of harmonized voices form the same family...
Performing a thousand year old singing traditional from a small obscure country...
Sounds that you would rarely hear in North America, let alone the rest of the world.
Experience one of the first diaspora singing ensemble of Georgian heritage.
Echoes of Sakartvelo, a concert of traditional Georgian polyphony, is a celebration of Ori Shalva’s return from Georgia and their release of their first EP, “Sounds of Georgia.”
In Sep 2024, Ori Shalva, aka the Makharashvili singing family, for the first time went to Georgia to perform and to study, and it was a mind blowing experience for them and for Georgians…
Because Ori Shalva, doesn’t just perform Georgian polyphony. When they sing the visceral harmonies of the millenia old musical tradition, they seem to tap into their genetic code and are able to create sounds that you would never hear outside of Georgia.
With their skill and inherited talent, their performances transcend space and time, and take you on a far-off musical journey of Sakartvelo (aka Georgia) - a small, ancient mountainous country located on the borders of Asia and Europe.
You can hear this even in their newly released EP, which was recorded in 2019, long before they became known as Ori Shalva.
Historically, the family unit played an instrumental role in preserving this UNESCO-recognized intangible masterpiece of humanity. Singing for Ori Shalva, like all Georgian singing families, is natural, instinctive, and originally framed by family celebrations, not staged performances.
It is only recently that Ori Shalva emerged into the Toronto scene as a professional group, due in large part to them being a viable performing unit living under one roof during the quarantine restrictions of the pandemic. As a result of this, they are grateful and honoured to have had featured performances with such presenters as SING!, Blokmusic.ca, Tafelmusik, and others.
Now is the chance to hear them live - hear the authentic sounds of Georgia, like no where else in the Americas!
Ori Shalva is Shalva, Shalva-Lucas (aka Luca) and Gabo Makharashvili and Andrea Kuzmich. By the way, Shalva is a traditional Georgian name and ori translates to 2 – which explains the meaning behind the name Ori Shalva.
