ERIC CHENAUX TRIO (bandcamp)
Renowned guitarist & singer Eric Chenaux returns to Toronto with his trio featuring Ryan Driver and Phil Melanson (Bernice) to celebrate the release of their new album together "Delights Of My Life" on Constellation Records. Gentle guitar notes stretch out & ripple underneath electric wurlitzer meanderings. Their airy notes dance together as they dissipate. Eric's voice weaves seamlessly among this textural landscape, on occasion joined by his band mates. Every movement is subtle, yet beautiful. A storyteller from a slower time, a player from the jazz tradition borrowing gracefully from the folk form. The trio moves in a languid yet natural state of being. Both Chenaux & Driver feel like they were born from the primordial dust of the Tranzac, while Melanson, a slightly newer addition to this world, now fits like an integral element. Don't miss this true gem of a sonic rambler with his trio!
CICI ARTHUR (bandcamp)
The newest brainchild from Chris Cummings (Marker Starling), Joseph Shabason, and Thom Gill (Bernice) hot off the release of "Way Through" on Western Vinyl. The trio takes Cummings melancholic, yet hopeful songwriting and injects it with sweeping arrangements, full of subtle flourishes from smooth strings, glowing vocal coos, and spectral keys. Sounding at times like an out of time Sinatra lost take, Cici Arthur channels moods from the intersection of adult contemporary, jazz, and contemporary avant pop. None of this is surprising based on the characters involved, but the execution is spot on and it's a pleasure to see how some of Toronto's greatest songwriters compliment each other.
