Founded in 1918 by graduates of the University of Toronto, Alumnae Theatre Company -affectionately known as The Alum - is the oldest theatre society in Toronto still in operation. Located in the historic Berkeley Street Firehall No. 4, this women-run charitable organization is dedicated to producing adventurous, thought-provoking theatre and nurturing the development of women in all aspects of stagecraft. With over a century of history, Alumnae Theatre has become a cornerstone of Toronto's cultural landscape, celebrated for championing bold new works and staging classics with a contemporary lens. Each season, audiences can enjoy a mix of innovative productions, including the New Ideas Festival, which showcases original short plays by emerging playwrights, and the FireWorks Festival, highlighting daring new works by Canadian voices. The theatre also offers workshops, volunteer opportunities, and skill-building programs, reflecting its mission to cultivate artistic growth and foster diversity both on stage and behind the scenes. Intimate, welcoming, and deeply community-driven, Alumnae Theatre continues to thrive as a hub where creativity, inclusivity, and storytelling come alive.
