A childhood spent living off-the-grid leads to an adolescence full of complications for the young protagonist in this engaging second feature by Toronto’s Carly Stone (The New Romantic, KCFF19). Based on Cea Sunrise Person’s 2014 memoir about her experiences growing up with her anti-establishment family in the wilds of 1970s Western Canada, Stone’s warm-hearted film traces the journey of Cea (played by River Price-Maena as a child and Amanda Fix as a teen) as she tries to find her own path in spite of the often questionable guidance provided by her free-spirited mother (festival favourite Sarah Gadon) and iconoclastic grandfather (the legendary Robert Carlyle). While this family’s idea of normal may seem unusual to some, Stone’s take on the push-and-pull of filial dynamics is as astute as it is relatable.
