Mozart's Requiem in D minor (K. 626) is an unfinished Mass for the Dead. Set to traditional Latin text, the music is a profound meditation on grief, mortality, and the Day of Judgment, combining terrifying visions of divine wrath with deeply personal pleas for mercy, eternal rest, and salvation. Mozart composed part of the Requiem in Vienna in late 1791, but it was unfinished at the time of his death on December 5, 1791, at the age of 35.
He had only fully written out the vocal lines and the bass line for the opening sections, leaving the orchestrations and middle parts as sketches. To ensure the piece was finished (and to receive the final payment for the commission), Constanze Mozart hired several of his students to complete the work. Ultimately, his young pupil Franz Xaver Suessmayr finished the orchestration, fleshed out the missing harmonies, and composed several of the final sections based on Mozart's initial sketches and verbal instructions
