Since the shop’s founding in the backroom of a convenience store on Yonge Street in 1990, Play de Record has been a vital community nexus for scores of DJs, collectors and beat junkies, becoming a crucial hub for the hip-hop, electronic and dance music scenes, not just in Toronto but nationwide. Featuring interviews with luminaries like Kardinal Offishall and Maestro Fresh Wes, as well as Play de Record’s humble founder and proprietor Eugene Tam, this documentary uses the store’s history as a means to take a wider look at innovations and developments in the music world over the last three decades. The Kingston via Toronto team of Rob Freeman and Neil Acharaya create a funky primer on how the underground sounds of one era became ubiquitous for the next generation, as well as a tribute to some of the music lovers who helped make that happen.
