Bia Ferreira is a Brazilian singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, anti-racist activist and fierce defendant of the LGBTIA+ community worldwide, who defines her music as "MMP — Música de Mulher Preta" (Black Woman Music). Her songs are against racism, homophobia and other issues. Feminism, love and politics are also themes she likes to explore.
As a teenager, she left home and traveled alone with a guitar throughout Brazil, living off her music, playing everywhere she could, singing and playing for everyone who wanted to hear her songs. She broke into public consciousness in 2017 with the track, Cota Não é Esmola, about the importance of the quota system for the access of the black population to the university. In addition to the more than 13 million views on YouTube and several million Spotify plays, the song became mandatory reading for the University of Brasília entrance exam. Bia has been playing solo or with her band throughout Brazil and Europe since 2017.
She made a live recording in 2018 for the Estúdio Showlivre project and subsequently was nominated for the 2018 Women in Music Awards. On her 2019 studio album, Igreja Lesbiteriana: Um Chamado (Lesbitarian Church: A Calling), the messages are harnessed to a carriage of funky beats, reggae and soul ballad grooves. In 2022, Bia released her second album Famine. In October 2022, she did a showcase at WOMEX (World Music Expo) in Lisbon, which ended up being one of the best and most popular among the delegates. That showcase finally gave Bia what she always wanted: for her music to be heard by people all over the world, even with lyrics sung in Portuguese.
Bia Ferreira has been, in the last years, one of the most and best defenders of free speech in Brazil, mainly about racism and LGBTQIA+ community/issues. She's been also one of the strongest "voices" against Jair Bolsonaro inside and outside Brazil. Her shows are full of music, love and passionate advocacy.
