It's a very cool show that Anne Lederman performs with Peter Jellard on accordion, mandolin, fiddle and guitar, and Pat O'Gorman on uilleann pipes, flute, and whistle. Anne plays fiddle, sings and talks - telling great stories about Irish-Canadian folklore and music, larger-than life characters, songs and tunes. The kitchens, parlours and dance halls of Canada have been ringing with the sounds of jigs and reels, ballads, and convivial songs from the Emerald Isle for nigh onto 300 years. Come and hear some of the great stories and Irish-Canadian music that is so much a part of our cultural world.
From the early 1500s the Irish have been coming to Canada, first to fish off the shores of Newfoundland but soon to settle in every corner of the country, where Irish music has blended with older Indigenous, Scottish and French traditions to create unique Canadian sounds. The old song melodies have acquired new Canadian words about life in the bush, on the great lakes, on farms and in lumber camps. There have been Irish heroines and heroes, poets, and bandleaders, and there have been wild characters.
Anne Lederman won Folk Music Ontario's Estelle Klein Award in 2016, and was inducted into the Canadian Fiddle Hall of Honour in 2022. Peter Jellard is a veteran of the Canadian music scene and has performed as a member of Cajun Ramblers, Swamperella and the Grievous Angels. Pat O’Gorman has been at the cutting edge of Canadian Trad/Celtic music for over 40 years with Na Cabarfeidh, Rare Air, Morgaine Le Fay, Windbags, and with The Brian Pickell Band. He has lived in the Algoma region for 22 years and is a founder and artistic director, with Julie Schryer, of AlgomaTrad.
