Be prepared to “wake up in the moonlight singing” after hearing Canadian composer Stephen Hatfield’s arrangement of “Jabula Jesu”, which opens our spring concert.
“Unclouded Day” is the theme for this exciting program, in which we are joined by Canadian saxophonist Wallace Halladay to perform Ola Gjeilo’s “Evening Prayer.” Written for choir, saxophone, and piano, “Evening Prayer” is Gjeilo’s first work featuring instrumental improvisation. We are thrilled to welcome Wallace, who was the 2009 winner of the Virginia Parker Prize from the Canada Council for the Arts and remains the only woodwind player to receive the prize in its thirty-year history. Along with pianist Monica Admiral, he will also perform Robert Schumann’s Adagio & Allegro, Op. 70.
The many other pieces on our program, both accompanied and a cappella, will send you home smiling, including the English folksong “Early One Morning”; favourites by Rheinberger and Finzi; John David’s “You Are the New Day”; a gorgeous arrangement of “Abide With Me” by Greg Jasperse; Canadian composer Don Macdonald’s “Winter Sun”; Dolly Parton’s “Light of a Clear Blue Morning”; and more! We can’t wait to sing the roof-raising “Unclouded Day,” an arrangement of J. K. Alwood’s treasured gospel tune by American composer Shawn Kirchner!
Mark your calendars for this delightful concert that promises to offer something for everyone!
