A big-hearted first feature by Métis actor and filmmaker Gail Maurice, ROSIE is a welcome reminder that families are so often not something we’re born into but something we create. In the centre of this family is Rosie (Keris Hope Hill), a recently orphaned Indigenous girl in 1980s Montreal whose only chance of staying out of foster care lies with Frédérique (Mélanie Bray), a Francophone woman who was raised alongside Rosie’s mother and who can barely take care of herself, let alone a youngster in need. Together with Frédérique’s gender-bending best friends Flo (Constant Bernard) and Mo (Alex Trahan), the group begin to forge a bond strong enough to weather all the adversity that surrounds them in Maurice’s wise and warm drama. ROSIE has already gained recognition as a favourite at festivals like TIFF and imagineNATIVE, and a selection in Canada’s Top Ten films of the year.
