A winner of major prizes at multiple festivals including Hot Docs and VIFF, Jacquelyn Mills’ mesmerizing documentary uses quiet and subtle means to sound the alarm about the many dangers facing our world. The film’s subject, Zoe Lucas, is a naturalist and environmentalist who has spent decades documenting the changes she’s seen on Sable Island, located off the coast of Nova Scotia. Since not even the tiniest insect escapes Lucas’ attention it feels fitting that Mills makes the most of equally small details, like the natural sounds ingeniously integrated into the soundtrack, or the sand, kelp and other unusual materials used to develop her film stock. As rich as Sable Island’s particular ecosystem proves to be, its fragility is just as evident, what with the equally wide variety of plastic debris continually washing ashore.
