A shy teenage boy’s fixation on the older daughter of his mother’s friend becomes enmeshed with more morbid curiosities in this eerie and alluring debut feature by actor turned filmmaker Charlotte LeBon. Casting a darker shadow on coming-of-age tales set during summer holidays, Le Bon surrounds her young characters with an atmosphere of menace and dread. At the same time, a surprising tenderness develops between Bastien (Joseph Engel), a 13-year-old Parisian on vacation with his family in Quebec, and Chloé (Sara Montpetit), who may not be as worldly as she initially seems. Unique and beguiling in its approach to themes of sexual discovery and murkier urges, the film earned LeBon a much-coveted place in the selection at the Cannes film festival and VIFF’s award for best emerging Canadian director.
