Thje Penderecki String Quartet is this area's most famous ensemble. They have traveled to all civilized parts of the world, bringing stunning sound, ensemble, and understanding to works both new and old. They have recently concluded a magnificent Beethoven Quartets series for the K-W Chamber Music Society, having also performedd over the y ears, all the qu9artets of Bartok and many others.
Their program for tonight includes Erwin Schulhoff, Five Pieces for String Quartet, and Brahms: String Quartet no. 1 in c. The quartet is in process of finding a third piece as well, although these two are arguably sufficient. The Brahms work was written comparatively late in life and has the sort of maturity and depth we find in his First Symphony as well. The Schulhoff was written in a Nazi prison camp.
Schulhoff's work has become much more popular since its rediscovery after WWII (he died in a aNazi prison, but of tuberculosis not execution. "He was one of the first generation of classical composers to find inspiration in the rhythms of jazz music.[4] Schulhoff also embraced the avant-garde influence of Dadaism in his performances and compositions after World War I.
