You will be grounded and uplifted by our spring concert as we explore the beauty of sights and sounds in the world around us! Our program features Finish composer Maentyjaervi’s Shakespeare Songs, a lively suite with intriguing harmonies and rhythmic “toil and trouble.” Also featured is Canadian composer Brian Tate’s Emily Carr Suite, with text by Emily Carr. (From the composer’s website: “Who knew that Canada’s famous visual artist was also good with words?”)
We are excited to bring you music of four other Canadians. Manitoban Andrew Balfour is a distinguished Indigenous composer. The Ojibway text of his choral work “Ambe,” which opens our program, translates as “Come in, all two-legged humans, there is good life here.” Nancy Telfer is a well-known Ontario-based composer. As with many of her compositions, she drew inspiration for “Silence” from the beauty of natural environments. Frank Thorolfson was the first chairperson of McMaster University's music department and we are pleased to be singing “The Ghost,” which he wrote for the McMaster University Choir. Also on tap is Ruth Watson Henderson’s “The Song My Paddle Sings.”
Other gems included in our program are the moving piece “Let My Love Be Heard” by Jake Runestad, “Sure on this Shining Night” by Morton Lauridsen, Dan Maclean’s ode to Vincent van Gogh, and Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence.”
Mark your spring calendars to come and be warmed by these delightful compositions as we present to you “Sights and Sounds”!
Cutoff is Sunday, April 30, 2023 12:29 pm EDT unless it sells out earlier.
