Atom Egoyan's long and very distinguished careers in the worlds of cinema and opera converge with spectacular results in the director's latest. It also marks the welcome return of Amanda Seyfried to what we might call the Egoyanverse, the actor having previously starred in his 2009 thriller Chloe. She gives a riveting performance as Jeanine, a director who's enlisted to oversee the revival of a production of Richard Strauss' opera Salome. Jeanine struggles to see through her task due to her fraught personal history with the original production and its controversial creator, her former mentor. This provocative premise becomes a ripe opportunity for Egoyan to revisit many of the psychosexual themes he's often explored while repurposing elements of his own 1996 mounting of Salome for the Canadian Opera Company. The combination yields a tour de force that's also a potent reminder of Egoyan's skill, intelligence and flair for provocation.
