With this special screening of one of the past year's most acclaimed first features - an Academy Award nominee for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay – KCFF is very happy to acknowledge the Kingston roots of its maker, Celine Song. Before the Korean-Canadian writer began her celebrated career in stage and screen in New York, she studied psychology at Queen's University with the aim of becoming a therapist. Instead, Song credits her viewing of a Queen's production of Bertolt Brecht's Drums in the Night for inspiring her to become a playwright. Her early experiences certainly help inform the semi-autobiographical character of Nora (Greta Lee), a woman who finds herself torn between two loves. Thoughtful, romantic and exquisitely rendered, Song's first feature is a special achievement, one that the festival is able to share once again on the big screen with Kingston audiences.
