Out for a week-long retreat that's supposed to make them stronger, the members of the family in Meredith Hama-Brown's compelling first feature instead come to feel a deeper sense of estrangement, as well as a possible ghost lurking at the edges of this idyllic Pacific Coast property. As the family's youngest member, six-year-old Emmy (Remy Marthaller) is the one who's most sensitive to the possibly supernatural presence, though to be fair, her parents Judith (Ally Maki) and Steve (Luke Roberts) are understandably distracted by the demands of their therapy sessions and other relationship issues that are coming to the surface. In her refreshingly confident and complex feature debut – the winner of major awards at TIFF and Cinefest – Hama-Brown renders this story's many subtle yet haunting notes with great care and precision.
