Music is widely acknowledged as one of the most important parts of cinema, and it can make or break your film. Finding a good collaborator is a challenge that this panel will dig into. Director Matt Finlin and musician Kevin Drew (bandleader and co-founder of Broken Social Scene) joined forces to create The Movie Man, and in this session they will facilitate a dialogue about the ins and outs of their collaboration.
This panel is presented in partnership with St. Lawrence College’s Music & Digital Media program.
Kevin Drew is known primarily as the bandleader and co-founder of the sprawling Toronto-based rock collective Broken Social Scene. With his band, Kevin has earned gold records, JUNO Award wins, performances on late night television, and festival headline slots. And he did so by breaking the industry mold, co-founding the independent record label Arts & Crafts with Jeffrey Remedios to release records. Over the subsequent 10 years, the label became pivotal in defining the growing indie rock sound. His relationship with Gord Downie, the beloved late frontman of the Tragically Hip, resulted in Kevin producing the band’s final album. That collaboration would continue with Drew producing and co-writing Downie’s two solo albums. Those three releases would net Kevin two more gold records and four more JUNO Awards.
In the subsequent years, Kevin would write and act in his debut theatrical play, A&R Angels, and hold his first solo gallery show featuring a collection of his art and poetry. In addition to the five full length Broken Social Scene albums, Kevin has released three solo records. In 2023, Kevin was recognized at the JUNO Awards with the MusiCounts Inspired Minds Ambassador Award for his philanthropic contributions to music education in Canada.
