UK angular weird punk trio of Jessica Hickie-Kallenbach (voice), Finlay Clark (guitar), and David Kennedy (drums) return to Toronto behind their new album "If I don't make it, I love u". Guitar jabs break apart into forlorn melodies barely held together, as raw vocals drip over them. Languid drum beats speed and slow as if running through mud and finally slipping free. Minimalistic guitar patterns hold a dub energy as they circle back on themselves. Straight up bare bones punk energy swells in these chopped song structures that feel fastened together with twine and fumes of wayward adrenaline. Toronto herky jerky punk crew Only God Forgives thrives on distorted grooves and riffs that jangle. Bass lines bounce and roll forward under rhythmic guitar fuzz. Sentimental guitar jams merge into vibrant punk rippers that are full of playful energy. Never a moment lost as the band switches gears. Julie Reich's avant pop / synth punk vehicle Bile Sister pulsates with funk and dub inspired rhythms. They move from high energy no wave-esque jams that bite at your heels to dreamy synthscapes full of wobbling bass lines and effected vocals. Reich's playful lyrics bounce over circular synth patterns. Airy electronic tones mix with elastic beats in what sounds like the inside of some haunted computer. If Lydia Deetz formed a band after her experience with Beetlejuice it might sound like this!
