Waterloo Region is home to a vibrant singer-songwriter scene, and we are bringing together three of these amazing artists to share their stories and their songs! Karen MacLeod, Michael Kelly Cavan and Amanda Kind are backed by four of the Region's beloved session musicians: Fred Smith, guitar, Paul Stouffer piano, Tom Nagy bass and Don McDougall, drums.
KAREN MacLEOD
A regular performer with the Waterloo Region's popular Irish roots IRL Festival since its inception, Karen MacLeod's "pure soprano is as haunting as a night wind on the western isles off the far coast of Scotland"- (Robert Reed, The Record). “Karen must be seen and heard to be believed. She possesses one of the most beautiful voices any of us have ever experienced.” - David Henman, April Wine
The Waterloo based Macleod sings in Scottish and Irish Gaelic, but has also sung in English, Latin, Italian, Spanish, German, French, Russian, Estonian and Hebrew. “I came to this genre because I’ve always loved the gorgeous melodies, ornamentation and other-worldly qualities of traditional celtic music. There are stunning ballads, laments, and folk songs that have come forward to us from the Middle Ages."
According to Macleod, these songs tell timeless, mythic stories that connect to universal emotions and experiences.
MICHAEL KELLY CAVAN
Michael Kelly Cavan is a Canadian musician, singer-songwriter, born in Ireland and raised by his immigrant parents in North Bay, Ontario. It was during his formative years that Michael found a love of music and his own Irish Tenor voice, first as a young choirboy and then as a singer and guitarist in the Irish pub scene. Michael has played in several rock/pop bands including a stint in Ireland with an Irish showband.
He has performed as a sing-a-long piano player on a tourist train (the Polar Bear Express), has graced the stages of Massey Hall, the El Mocambo, the Horseshoe Tavern, Hughs Room and various other venues. He has sung the Irish National Anthem (in gaelic) in Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto to kick off the St. Patricks day celebrations and frozen his fingers off while playing on a float in the Toronto St Patricks' Day parade for several years. He currently performs throughout Southwestern Ontario and has released 5 CD's to date and is working on a new one of original material.
With his singing, playing, storytelling, lyrical tenor voice and gentle wit, Michael continues to provide heartwarming and foot-tapping entertainment wherever he finds a stage. Michael Kelly Cavan Live at The REGISTRY
AMANDA KIND
Amanda Kind’s soulful brand of country is a blend of contemporary and classic – think Martina McBride meets Patsy Cline.
Growing up, Amanda’s biggest musical inspirations came from a wide variety of artists from Dolly Parton and Shania Twain, to Alanis Morrisette, Green Day, Mariah Carey, and more.
Following her popular song “Slow Dance” (peaked at #1 on SiriusXM’s Top of the Country chart) her new single “The Good Fight” is a powerful tribute to going through difficult times to get to the good. It is the final single and title track from her debut country EP, which also includes her previous singles: “Love Used To Live Here,” “Slow Dance,” “Rebel Spirit,” “Jumping Through Hoops,” and “Distant Memory.” Amanda performs regularly at venues big and small from festivals and theatres to intimate songwriter rounds and porch parties.
Cutoff is Sunday, February 2, 2025 5:29 pm EST unless it sells out earlier.
