About Plains Conservation Center

The Plains Conservation Center in Aurora, Colorado is a nature preserve and outdoor education center dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich prairie ecosystem and Colorado's cultural heritage.

Managed by the Denver Botanic Gardens in collaboration with the City of Aurora, the center spans 1,100 acres of shortgrass prairie and offers immersive, hands-on experiences for visitors of all ages.

At the heart of the center are replica 1800s homestead buildings and a Cheyenne tipi camp, offering a glimpse into the lives of early settlers and Indigenous peoples. Trails wind through native grasslands where guests can observe local wildlife like pronghorn antelope, hawks, and prairie dogs.

Visitors are welcome to hike the trails for free, explore the exhibits in the visitor center, or take part in guided educational programs, tours, or seasonal events for a small fee.

Open from Wednesday to Sunday, with varying hours, the center is especially popular for its school field trips, homeschool programs, group tours, and community events like the Prairie Art Celebration. This annual summer event features Colorado artists, live music, food trucks, family-friendly crafts, and nature-based activities.
